Reyaneh Jabbari still under threat of execution for defending herself from a would be rapist…

UPDATE:

I am heartbroken to report thay efforts to save Rehaneh were unsuccessful. They executed murdered her anyway.

I did recieve a comment asking me to take down this post by someone who said such petitions were making things worse for Ms. Jabbari, and that the final decision was in the hands of the family of the would-be rapist.  I presume by pointing that out, the commenter (who’s comment and request I refused) was implying that efforts to save her were somehow shaming his family.

Ah yes, that so-called honour code that revolves around the women and their vaginas, not on the words and deeds of the men who commit crimes against them.  Sorry commenter, perhaps you’re right that the petition I signed and posted about, and others like it, “made things worse,” as you stated.  But sitting on our asses and pretending such atrocities aren’t really happening, and pandering to warped ideology such as that put this young women in prison for the “crime” of protecting herself, then after years of mental torture, murdered her anyway, will not stop it from happening again.  The ONLY thing that will help is the people in such societies refusing to accept this kind of brutality, and if that means those of us in the rest of the world must shame them into doing so by shining bright lights on the stories of real victims like Reyhaneh Jabbari, then so be it.

Believe me when I say I don’t pass along stories like hers lightly.  I do not.

In support of 5 October: Day to Save Reyhaneh Jabbari from Execution in Iran | Maryam Namazie

http://freethoughtblogs.com/maryamnamazie/2014/10/05/in-support-of-5-october-day-to-save-reyhaneh-jabbari-from-execution-in-iran/

I meant to share this the other day, but fell asleep right in the middle of doing so.  Shame on me!  (My pitiful defence is that I was still quite ill with a virus I’d picked up a few weeks prior.)

In any case, I strongly encourage anyone who sees this post to read it, share it and sign the petition!

It’s the story of a young woman held in Iran’s notorious Evin prison after being convicted by a Sharia “court” for the murder of her would be rapist.  It was a simple case if self defence, yet she was summarily tried and convicted without anything resembling what anyone (who is sane) would consider a fair or unbiased process.

I just Googled for the latest on this and found this article.  She is still alive, but it’s not looking good…

Ms. Jabbari has been under a death sentence for years now and has gone though horrific trauma.  Please, I don’t know if the petition linked to in the attached re-blog of Maryam Namazie, will help or not.  But surely the more Jabbari’s story is shared around the world, and the more people who sign the petition declaring how unacceptable these kind of kangaroo convictions are to the rest of the world, it will put much needed pressure on Iran to save her, reverse the conviction, and join the 21st century…

The War on Women, Racism & Hate Speech

I am re-blogging this FreeThoughtBlog (FtB) by PZ Meyers to help get the word.  As well as reading the FtB by PZ – linked to below – also click on the article PZ links to his first paragraph.  It takes you to one highlights some of the truly vile sub-reddits promoting Corrective Rape, Racism, Wife Beating and Other Revolting sub-Forums that Reddit allows to take place on their virtual space.

Scroll to the bottom of that second article and you will see a link to report Reddit to the FBI if you wish.  And I encourage you do just that, regardless of what country you live in.  This is not free speech.  It’s undiguised hate speech that encourages criminal behaviour, and by allowing them to to use resources and space, it makes Reddit complicit in my opinion.

India, Rape Culture and Misogny – TRIGGER WARNING

Trigger warning:  The below reblog was written by an East Indian medical student currently living and working in India.  It contains material that may easily offend a good number of people.

A reminder that all comments on my blog are moderated.  If you are offended by this post and wish to lash out at me or any of my other readers, your comments will *not* be approved. Threats and personal attacks will result in your being immediately banned.

Please read my below preface and proceed at your own risk.

==============================

From a blogger who writes under the pseudonym Avicenna on his Freethought blog, “Atheist Medical Student Stuck in a Land of a Million Gods.”

It’s a very long post, but *well worth* the time it takes to read.

It delves deeply into culturally dangerous ground, discussing as it does – at length – the misogny & rape culture so deeply embedded in Indian society….and how one feeds the other to hurt both men and women.

Again, remember this is *not* my work.

However, I do think it’s a very important contribution in the fight for equality for all genders, and strongly believe it is a very important article that needs to reach as many people as possible.  Please understand that I am not reblogging this with any racial, sexist or political motive.

Blinders on: Violence Against Women and Male Denial

This is a FreeThought re-blog.

The blogger, Miri, shows very eloquently how one of the biggest problems to stop violence against women is the pure denial of men who while not themselves the perpetrators, are silently complicit by denial and disbelief.
